Day 1: Explore & Learn at Dworshak Dam & Fisheries

Morning:

• Start your day with breakfast (grab a coffee and some pastries at Ronatta's Cakery) in Orofino, then head to Dworshak Dam Visitor Center

• Learn about hydropower, flood control, and fish conservation in interactive exhibits

• Take in panoramic views of the dam and reservoir from the visitor center

Midday: Visit Dworshak Fisheries Complex

• Explore the Dworshak National Fish Hatchery, one of the largest steelhead trout hatcheries in the U.S.

• See young steelhead and Chinook salmon being raised for release into the Clearwater River

• Learn how the hatchery supports wildlife conservation and enhances the region’s fisheries

Afternoon: Scenic Drive & Hiking

• Take a drive across Dent Bridge, one of Idaho’s tallest suspension bridges

• Enjoy stunning lake views along the Elk River Backcountry Byway

• Hike Big Eddy Trail for breathtaking overlooks or Cold Springs Trail for a peaceful nature walk

Evening: Camping or Cozy Stays

• Set up camp at Dent Acres Campground, Freeman Creek Campground or stay at a nearby rustic lodge

• Unwind with a campfire dinner and soak in the beauty of Dworshak at sunset

Day 2: Fishing & Outdoor Fun

• Get on the water for fishing—Dworshak is a hotspot for kokanee salmon, bass, and rainbow trout 

• No boat? No problem! Fish from shore at multiple access points

• Launch your boat, kayak, or paddleboard and explore the reservoir’s hidden coves

• Pack a picnic and enjoy lunch on the water with unbeatable views

• Drive the Elk River Backcountry Byway to visit Elk Creek Falls, Idaho’s tallest waterfall, for an epic hike. Revel in the beauty of three separate waterfalls totaling over 140 feet that carve through a beautiful canyon filled with mesmerizing columnar basaltic formations.

• Spot wildlife like eagles, elk, and deer as you explore the backcountry

Evening (Optional Extended Stay):

• Stay another night under the stars, or head back to Orofino for dinner at a local eatery and a riverside stay.
